Our Herstory
Rooted in Tradition, Rising to the Future: Embracing the Journey Ahead
IndigenousWays was established in 2007 by Tash Terry, a Diné from the Navajo Nation, and Elena Higgins, of Maori/Samoan descent from New Zealand. Initially known as Indigie Femme, a musical duo empowering Indigenous women, Tash and Elena joined forces to further their lifelong mission as singer-songwriters. Their aim: to produce music that heals, inspires positive change, and raises awareness about Indigenous Wisdom and the vital survival of Indigenous communities globally.
Upon receiving overwhelming feedback from their performances and workshops at national and international venues, they found the inspiration to establish IndigenousWays. Their travels unveiled a common necessity among Indigenous communities worldwide: the profound integration of culture, spirituality, and community for survival. Recognizing the power of music, storytelling, and the arts, they paved the way to raise awareness and garner global support for these communities.
IndigenousWays is a nonprofit organization in Northern New Mexico led by Indigenous women and one man. Native Americans make up 10.6% of New Mexico's population. For the last 17 years, the organization has been offering comprehensive Indigenous educational programs, including artistic and musical performances, as well as initiatives aimed at promoting cultural awareness, values, and traditions.
IndigenousWays focuses on contemporary issues and promotes Proactive solutions with a community-centered approach through:
Creative utilization of music and educational, community-centered creative initiatives.
Striving to uplift, empower, and nurture Indigenous children, youth, and families by honoring both traditional and contemporary wisdom in an all-inclusive approach.
Continuing to build strong Indigenous partnerships to empower and advance efforts in decolonization, preventing cultural appropriation, combating racism, and promoting the utilization of Indigenous Wisdom to heal all communities.
Harnessing cultural and artistic venues, we champion collaborative planning and action, showcasing the cultural strengths inherent in all Indigenous groups and peoples.
Ensuring that these cultural and artistic strengths are applied in consistent and respectful ways can enhance the potential and ability to address the many complex, critical, and life-threatening issues faced by Indigenous communities.
Contributing to the healing of Indigenous communities by amplifying social issues through culturally rooted, community-based teachings and learning methods centered around the arts.
